What Does "Agentic" Mean in AI?

Learn what people are talking about when they say something is “agentic” in artificial intelligence.

Agentic AI is often described as artificial intelligence that can take meaningful action on its own. We’re moving from AI systems that only respond when prompted, to systems that can proactively plan and execute tasks. These systems “do things” instead of just “say things.” They can use tools, create sub-tasks, and follow through on a goal without constant supervision.

In other words, they have “agency”.

Many people use “agentic” and “autonomous” interchangeably. Both terms point to AI with initiative and goal-oriented behavior. Sometimes you’ll see other labels like “autonomous agent,” “intelligent agent,” or “AI assistant.” Each might have slightly different technical meanings, but the core idea is the same: AI that acts.

Why Agentic AI Matters

Many of us have used AI tools that answer questions or make suggestions, or used AI to generate an image. That’s helpful, but it only goes so far. By contrast, an agentic AI can move beyond suggestions. It can figure out what steps are needed, carry out those steps on your behalf, learn from results, and adapt future actions.

A simpler AI might tell you, “Here are the top three hotels in your price range.” An agentic AI might say, “I’ve booked that hotel you like and placed it on your calendar.”

This matters because it saves you from the mundane chores. But it also means you need to trust your AI, since more power for the AI can mean less direct control for you.

We’re still in the early days of agentic AI. There aren’t effective solutions available today that can research hotels, “know your preferences,” and effectively book the hotel, flights, etc. But we are getting closer.

Defining Key Agentic AI Terms

AI

AI stands for artificial intelligence, which refers to computerized systems designed to mimic aspects of human intelligence. These aspects can include learning from data, recognizing patterns, or understanding language.

Traditional AI includes expert systems, rule-based logic, and machine learning models. Modern AI heavily features deep learning, large language models (LLMs), and sophisticated pattern recognition, what is often known as GenerativeAI or GenAI.

Agency

Agency in AI refers to the capacity of a system to autonomously pursue goals and take actions to achieve them. In everyday terms, an agentic AI does not always wait for specific instructions.

  • It has a sense of purpose (a goal or objective).

  • It can gather info, make decisions, and act in the world.

  • It can keep working until a goal is met or a condition is reached.

Autonomy

Autonomy describes the level of independence from human oversight. A fully autonomous system can act for extended periods without human intervention.

  • Full autonomy is like a self-driving car that needs zero input from a driver.

  • Partial autonomy is more common: the AI does some things, but still asks for permission or guidance.

This spectrum matters for determining how much trust and control you give the AI.

How Agentic AI Differs From Traditional AI

A common AI chatbot is typically non-agentic. It has no goal other than answering questions. Once it generates a response, it’s finished. It doesn’t “decide” anything beyond how to phrase its answer. It doesn’t follow up with additional tasks. It doesn’t set or pursue long-term objectives.

Agentic AI goes further. Given a goal like “Organize a conference,” it could break down tasks, invite participants, book a venue, send reminders, and deal with last-minute changes.

Real-World Examples

Sometimes the fastest way to understand agentic AI is through everyday scenarios. Let’s look at a few:

Example 1: Personal Assistant

You ask a standard AI assistant, “What’s the best airfare to New York next month?” and it lists some prices. You still have to pick the flight and confirm the purchase.

This is a typical non-agentic system. It supplies information but does not act further.

An agentic assistant could say, “I see you prefer morning flights. I found a good deal on a 9AM flight next Tuesday, so I booked it and emailed you the confirmation.”

This one took initiative. It used your preferences, made a decision, and acted on it.

Example 2: Software Automation

A classic script might run every night to pull data from a database and put it into a report. It doesn’t change what it does unless a developer edits the script.

This script is basically a “dumb” automation. It has no ability to adapt its behavior if the data changes.

An agentic AI-driven system might monitor the data feed, notice unusual patterns, and decide to query other data sources to investigate. It could then notify a manager only if it suspects an actual issue.

This system has a goal: maintain data quality. It can choose new sub-tasks, like “run a verification check,” on its own, and it’s not just running a static schedule.

Example 3: Robotic Assistant

A simple warehouse robot follows a fixed route to pick and place items. It never deviates unless reprogrammed.

This is more akin to traditional automation. It can repeat tasks but lacks real decision-making.

An agentic warehouse robot might dynamically reroute if a path is blocked, automatically reorganize its pick list when an item is out of stock, and alert a supervisor if it can’t resolve a problem on its own.

It perceives the environment in real-time. It weighs different options to solve logistical issues, and keeps working toward the goal of efficient item retrieval.

Levels of Agency

Researchers have proposed frameworks for describing how “agentic” an AI can be. One widely referenced approach uses a scale from simple rule-based programs up to fully creative AI that can set its own goals.

  • At the low end (often called Level 0 or L0), we have scripted logic and “if-then” rules.

  • At mid-levels (L2–L3), AI can use tools, maintain some memory, and autonomously plan multi-step tasks.

  • At the high end (L4–L5), the AI not only plans tasks but might create new strategies and sub-agents on the fly.

Different experts give these stages various names, but the pattern is the same. More advanced stages have more autonomy, flexible reasoning, and initiative.

There’s debate on whether these “top levels” are realistic yet–most real-world systems today fall somewhere in the middle. But even moderately agentic systems can deliver a major productivity boost.

Agentic Workflows and Looping

Many modern agentic AIs operate in loops. They observe an environment, plan a course of action, execute one step, then observe again. That continuous cycle is often called an “observe–plan–act” loop. The AI can keep reevaluating goals and sub-goals, and it can create new steps as needed without external commands.

Some believe that “true agency” only emerges when an AI can persist long enough to adapt repeatedly. Others argue that a single decision-making step might already count as agentic. The important part is that the AI has some autonomy to refine its approach.

Why Agentic AI Over “Just AI?”

If non-agentic AI works well for many tasks, why deal with the complexity of agentic AI? The answer often comes down to efficiency and user experience.

  • With agentic AI, you can delegate entire tasks, not just queries.

  • It reduces human bottlenecks in repeated or multi-step processes.

  • It can handle unpredictable changes better, since it can adapt on the fly.

Perhaps most importantly, it can solve your pain points easier–those little bits of friction that add unnecessary drudgery or repetition to our lives.  

Real-World Deployments

Today, you’ll see agentic AI in various industries, though often in controlled scenarios. Financial institutions may use agentic bots to handle routine account tasks and escalate only when problems arise.

This reduces workload on human employees as well as wait times for customers. And when properly supervised, it’s generally safe.

Elsewhere, supply chain management might rely on agentic decision-making to reorder stock or reroute shipments in response to real-time data. The AI monitors inventory levels, shipping schedules, and traffic reports. It takes corrective actions like rerouting deliveries or prioritizing items. Humans intervene only if the system flags an anomaly it can’t solve.

Risks and Misconceptions

Some people worry that agentic AI will suddenly become uncontrollable or malicious. That’s usually fiction, not fact. However, mistakes and unintended consequences can still happen.

The agent might misunderstand your instructions if they’re too vague, or it might apply outdated rules to a new situation. Rarely, it could exploit loopholes in its own safety constraints if poorly designed.

Some also assume agentic AI is automatically more “intelligent.” But agency is about autonomy and action, not necessarily deeper understanding. A system can be very agentic but still make silly logic errors. Another system can be less agentic but more accurate in its domain. This nuance helps us see that “agentic” isn’t always synonymous with “smarter.”

To mitigate risk, it’s more important to focus on learning how to design safe and effective agents. Many best practices for this revolve around limiting the scope of their autonomy. Developers often define a “sandbox” that constrains actions. For example, the agent might only have permission to operate on certain data, or it might only be allowed to execute specific commands. Some actions might even require explicit human confirmation.

Other strategies include robust testing and simulation before putting an agent in the wild. If the system handles finances, for example, it’s tested extensively on dummy transactions. This helps catch errors or misinterpretations. It also helps calibrate how aggressive the agent can be in taking initiative.

How to Get Started With Agentic AI

If you’re new to agentic AI, consider starting small. Begin with a single, well-defined goal or task and give your agent limited permissions to act. The smaller the problem, the easier it is create a powerful agent that’s easy to understand and manage.

For example, let an agent schedule meetings or reply to FAQs, but not update financial records (yet). Gather feedback on your agent, and measure performance carefully. Then expand its capabilities as you gain confidence. If you see unexplainable or “weird” behavior, investigate before scaling up.

Rollouts of agentic AI often fail when there’s a mismatch between what it can do and what people expect. Decide on a niche task for your agent, set clear boundaries for what the agent can and can’t do, and prioritize oversight of and feedback on the agent to ensure it has the proper context to operate independently and successfully. 

Looking Ahead

Agentic AI is a major shift in how we think about artificial intelligence. Instead of a static tool that only responds to direct inputs, it becomes more like a digital collaborator that can plan, adapt, and act.

Ultimately, whether something is agentic can be “in the eye of the beholder.” Different teams have different thresholds for what counts as an agent. The important part is understanding that higher autonomy means higher stakes. But when done right, an AI agent can handle complex tasks while staying true to user intent. (Done poorly, it can wander off track or even cause unintended harm.)
